Description

The "Stephan Quintet" ... One of the most difficult and at the same time spectacular astronomical objects in the sky, one of those that, for their beauty and above all for the theory that describes their origin, conquers and kidnaps you ...
Stephan's Quintet is a visual group of five galaxies located in the constellation of Pegasus. According to some studies, not all of these galaxies would be really close to each other, in fact, NGC 7320 is in random overlap due to our line of observation, while the rest seem to be relatively close. NGC 7320 could be about 32 million light years from our galaxy while the other four are at distances between 280 and 340 million light years.
These galaxies are interesting for their violent interactions. There are huge intergalactic shock waves, visible in the image as arcs that come out of one galaxy to enter another. During the collision between the NCG 7318b and the NCG 7318a, the gases escape from the clusters of stars and the superheated hydrogen atoms emit radiation.
The faint galaxy located above, NGC 7320c, crossed the central group hundreds of millions of years ago; this interaction ripped part of its gas from the galaxy NGC 7319, giving rise to a violent episode of star formation, indicated in the diagram as "Starburst region". This distant interaction event could be responsible for the formation of the long tidal tails that extend east of the galaxy.
